Scene at MIT: Supermoon over MIT

"Most mornings I scull on the Charles River, from the Union Boat Club boathouse, just east of the Hatch Shell, up river past MIT. This time of year we launch well before sunrise so the night sky and the illuminated MIT campus are familiar rowing companions.

During many rows over the years, my friend and rowing partner James Keating, an astronomy teacher at Marblehead High School, has tutored me on the sky and the comings and goings of the moon in particular.

One thing I have been surprised to experience is just how fast the moon moves. Knowing the November 2016 "supermoon" would be the last for decades, and especially that its setting viewed from near Union Boat Club would be over MIT, I thought it would be a great opportunity to capture this rapid lunar motion. The clear weather made it possible."
